🐕 Bobi

Dog (Rafeiro do Alentejo) · Conqueiros, Leiria, Portugal

Lives in Legends Garden

Bobi was a Rafeiro do Alentejo, a Portuguese livestock guardian breed that usually lives 12 to 14 years. His owner Leonel Costa said he was born on 11 May 1992 and had been hidden as a puppy from a family cull, and Guinness World Records certified him as the oldest dog ever on 2 February 2023. He died on 21 October 2023, and the claim then collapsed: the Portuguese pet database it rested on did not require proof of birth for animals registered before 2008, and vets pointed out that early photographs attributed to him showed different markings. Guinness revoked the title on 22 February 2024 and tightened its rules for the record.

What they do

Lowers himself down in stages the way very old big dogs do — front legs buckling first, chest sinking, then the back end folding — and settles his head onto his paws. Three frames: standing, half-down on the elbows, flat with head on paws..

Ancient farm dog energy. Ate whatever the family ate, went where he liked, answered to nobody.
