Nala was adopted from an overcrowded Los Angeles shelter at four months old in 2010 and began appearing on Instagram in 2012. Guinness World Records verified her on 13 May 2020 as the most-followed cat on Instagram with 4,361,519 followers, a record she still holds. Her owner Pookie Methachittiphan launched the cat food brand Love, Nala in 2019, which says it has donated over 500,000 meals to rescues.
