Maru was a Scottish Straight who lived in Japan with an owner who went only by the name Mugumogu and described herself as his roommate rather than his owner. From the launch of the mugumogu YouTube channel in July 2008 he became the internet's definitive box cat, diving head-first into cardboard boxes obviously too small for him, and Guinness World Records certified him the most-viewed animal on YouTube in September 2016. He died on 6 September 2025 aged 18, of lung adenocarcinoma, after several weeks of declining health.
