Round stingray (Urobatis halleri) Β· Aquarium & Shark Lab by Team ECCO, Hendersonville, North Carolina, USA
Lives in Legends Garden
In February 2024 a small aquarium in the North Carolina mountains announced that Charlotte, a round stingray who had not shared a tank with a male of her species in at least eight years, appeared to be pregnant. The story ran worldwide for months, with the aquarium's director suggesting parthenogenesis and others floating an impossible bamboo shark father. On 1 June 2024 the aquarium said Charlotte was not pregnant at all but had a rare reproductive disease, and she died on 30 June 2024 after eight years there. Her keepers said they hoped her case would contribute to the very limited research on the condition.
What they do
Ripples the whole edge of her flat round disc in a travelling wave to fly forward, then settles flat and shrugs sand up over her back until only her eyes show..
A quiet housekeeper who spent her days shuffling sand, and somehow generated the loudest headlines in the building.
