Lives in Legends Garden
Australian comedian Jim Dezarnaulds, who performed as Jimbo Bazoobi, acquired Gary in 2011 in exchange for a case of beer at a show in Gingin, Western Australia, and the two spent years touring pubs together. In January 2013 police fined Dezarnaulds A$440 for letting Gary eat plants outside Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art; a magistrate threw the case out, and the story turned Gary into a national figure. Their Facebook page grew past 1.7 million followers. Gary was diagnosed with terminal arthritis in 2016 and was euthanised on 16 November 2017, aged six.
