A lone adult male beluga turned up near Ingøya in northern Norway in April 2019 wearing a man-made harness stamped Equipment St. Petersburg with a mount for a camera, which is how the spy-whale story started. Norwegians named him Hvaldimir, from hval, whale, and Vladimir. He never rejoined a pod, spent five years working his way south along the coast around fish farms and harbours, and sought out people constantly. He was found dead near Stavanger on 31 August 2024, aged roughly 14 or 15, far short of a beluga's usual 40 to 60 years.
What they do
Rises nose-first alongside a boat holding a dropped phone in his mouth, hands it back, then rolls belly-up against the hull for a rub.
Never met a boat he did not want to make friends with, and would fetch your phone back if you dropped it.
Lore
- ★The harness he arrived in was labelled Equipment St. Petersburg and had a mount for a camera; his actual origin was never established.
- ★He returned dropped phones to boat crews and played with rugby balls, and his worn teeth matched those of belugas raised in captivity.
- ★At about 4.2 metres and roughly 14 years old he was young for a beluga; the post-mortem found no gunshot wounds, only bird pecking marks.
