Nobiko was a deaf cat rescued from a Japanese street in 2002, grey and thin at the time and white and fluffy by adulthood. Around 2005 a photo of her held up under the forelegs, body hanging in one improbably long white column, appeared on the imageboard Futaba Channel and crossed to 4chan's /b/ as 'Longcat', where 'LONGCAT IS LOOOONG' made her a defining meme of the imageboard era. A colour-inverted version of the same picture, Tacgnol, was invented as her nemesis in a joke apocalypse called Catnarok. She died on 20 September 2020 at 18.
What they do
Held up by the armpits so her body stretches downward - a three-frame stretch, front paws dangling straight, back legs reaching for a floor that is not there..
Deaf, unbothered and improbably elastic - she went long the instant anyone lifted her.
