πŸ¦… Murphy

Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) Β· World Bird Sanctuary, Valley Park, Missouri, USA

Lives in Legends Garden

Murphy was a non-releasable bald eagle who had lived at the World Bird Sanctuary for most of his 33 years. In March 2023 keepers found he had scraped a nest into the floor of his aviary and was carefully incubating a rock. The sign they put up for confused visitors - explaining that he was not hurt, sick or in distress, he was simply brooding a stone - went round the world. The story got its ending when staff swapped the rock for an orphaned eaglet named Rocky, whom Murphy raised and who was released to the wild on 7 July 2023. He fostered a second eaglet in April 2024. He died after storms hit the sanctuary in March 2025.

What they do

Lowers himself down onto a rock, shuffles his body from side to side to settle it under him, then tucks both wings in around it - a three-frame brooding shuffle..

A gruff old bachelor who turned out to be the softest dad in the building.
