Rosa was rescued as a four-week-old stranded pup in 1999, released back to the wild, and returned permanently to Monterey Bay Aquarium after she became too comfortable around people. She spent the next two decades as a surrogate mother, raising 15 orphaned pups for release into the wild, and became the best-known face on the aquarium's sea otter cam. A birthday fundraiser for her 24th run by the streamer DougDoug raised about $300,000; she was euthanised on 5 June 2024, one of the oldest southern sea otters on record.
What they do
Floats on her back, hauls a pup up onto her chest and grooms it with both front paws, rolling once in the water to keep it dry..
