Fatu was born in 2000 at Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic and moved to Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya in 2009. Since her grandfather Sudan died on 19 March 2018, she and her mother Najin have been the only northern white rhinos left on Earth, which makes the subspecies functionally extinct. Neither can carry a pregnancy, so the BioRescue programme collects Fatu's eggs under sedation; 38 northern white embryos now exist, waiting on a southern white surrogate. The pair live in a guarded 700-acre enclosure with a watchtower, armed rangers and sniffer dogs.
What they do
Drops her head to crop grass with a wide square lip, swishes her tasselled tail, then swings her heavy head up and around to face her keeper.
Grumpy as a teenager, picks fights with her own mother, and carries an entire subspecies on her back.
