πŸ„ Otter 841

Southern sea otter Β· Santa Cruz, California - the surf break at Steamer Lane and the harbour mouth

Lives in Lagoon

841 is a wild southern sea otter, born around 2018 at UC Santa Cruz's coastal campus and raised by her own mother at Monterey Bay Aquarium before being released at Moss Landing in June 2020. From mid-2023 she began climbing onto surfboards off Santa Cruz and refusing to get off, gnawing chunks out of them while the surfers swam for shore. Wildlife officials tried to capture her in July 2023 and then abandoned the plan when she turned up with a pup that October.

What they do

Hauls out onto the nose of a surfboard, sits up on the deck, and gnaws the rail with both front paws while the board tips and wobbles under her..

Not aggressive, exactly - just completely certain that the board is hers now.

πŸ’› Support Otter via Monterey Bay Aquarium

841 is wild and has no fund of her own. Monterey Bay Aquarium raised her and runs the southern sea otter surrogacy and rescue programme she came from; this link resolves to their live donation page. It supports the programme, not 841 personally. This opens their own official page. Money never touches this site.
